Requirements

This project will rehabilitate The Declaration House to upgrade its conditions so that it may welcome new visitors while maintaining its architectural merit. This includes:

  • redesigning visitor access to meet ABA Accessibility Standards
  • recreating period rooms on the first floor
  • replacing the roofs
  • providing accessible toilets and a utility closet
  • mothballing the basement, second, third, and attic floors while providing conditioned space for visitors and park staff on the first floor
  • the building envelope will also be rehabilitated including windows, doors, and curtainwalls
  • repointing the brick facade and rehabilitate shutters, doors, and trim
  • rehabilitate courtyard hardscape and landscaping • deteriorated mechanical systems will be replaced to meet code and energy standards
  • new finishes will be provided throughout most of the first floor while the remainder of the building will be left as-is with exception to water damage repairs and interpretive period room finishes to be reused on the first floor
  • the contents (including antiques that are part of the Park’s museum collection) of the upstairs two furnished rooms will need to be packed, moved and stored off-site as part of the project. Then at the end, they will need to be reinstalled in the two downstairs rooms.
  • period furnishings and some finishes will be salvaged, stored, and reinstalled within the first floor, accessible, interpretive period rooms mothballed spaces will include minimal HVAC systems to protect from freezing and mold growth
